What is breathwork?
The act of breathing is predominantly an unconscious function of the body. As we go about our daily life, the air comes in, and the air comes out. This happens around 22,000 times each and every day. Most of the human population has lost touch with the power of our breath. It was well known in ancient times as a tool for self-discovery, self-mastery, healing, and for spiritual purposes. There are countless variations in breath-centered practices and techniques and as a result, the modern term “Breathwork” is used to refer to them. Despite sharing a similar term, the effects of the various practices on the body, mind, and spirit are profound.
How does it work?
The specific breathwork technique used at The Nurse Intuitive is conscious- connected breath or other times referred to as circular mouth breathing. It consists of a two part inhalation, and a single exhale. During this practice, we are breathing through our mouth- straight into the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight system) as a means to achieve emotional release, and to increase feelings of calmness and relaxation. When we become stressed, angry, frustrated, worried, anxious, depressed, or even scared, our body releases a chemical wave through our body that activates our sympathetic nervous system. This is our basic fight or flight response that makes us tense up, restricts our pupils, increases our heart rate, and shallows our breathing pattern. This clamping down action can trap emotion in the body and eventually lead to dis-ease and feelings of unwell. When we intentionally breathe into this system, through the use of conscious connected breath, we activate the same system, but override it in a way that allows the system to open and release the negative energy- almost like hitting a reset button.
During a session you are guided through every step of the process. You are lying flat on your back without the use of pillows. With soft music and guidance, you can have some truly life changing experiences in only 10-15 minutes! By the end of the session, you are feeling refreshed, and full of love, gratitude, peace, and harmony. At least in the beginning, you may experience some discomfort as your body adjusts. It is completely normal and totally harmless. Remember YOU are in charge of the session. You can slow it down for a few minutes and start back when you feel more at ease after a few breaths through your nose.
Those just beginning to practice breathwork report sensations of:
tingling in their hands, feet, and face
Dizziness and or light-headedness
Muscle tightness (especially if they have a calcium, magnesium, or iron deficiency)
States of emotional release
What are the benefits?
The aim of conscious connected breath is to bring in as much life giving oxygen in the body as we can. This influences the body’s chemistry and helps us to achieve certain physical benefits along with the mental benefits of a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and increased mental focus. A side benefit to this deep breathing practice is that it can help to improve respiratory function by allowing the lungs to tone and more fully expand and contract.
While you are breathing, here is what is happening to your body:
Your body’s cells receive a flood of nourishing oxygen
Your brain begins to produce alpha waves which are associated with feelings of calm, peace, and relaxation.
Your mind clears as your focus becomes solely on the act of breathing. With this pause in mental chatter, your subconscious mind goes to work unpacking and filing memories, stored emotions, and experiences which frees up space for higher-level cognitive processes like decision-making, self awareness, and attention and focus.
Other benefits of breathwork include:
Stress relief and a deep sense of relaxation
Improves mood and reduces feelings of anxiety and depression.
Enhances breathing function and immune function
Relief from physical pain
Improves sleep and increases energy levels
Emotional regulation
Manifesting greater abundance
Deep healing of wounds, grief, and traumas
Access to expanded states of consciousness, including higher guidance and clarity
Transcendence of the mind and emotions; awakening to the truth of who you really are
Mystical revelations
Greater self-love and more loving relationships
Increased connection to source
Overwhelming feelings of joy
Deep inner peace
Feelings of connectedness and oneness

“ Hearing about Reiki, I was a little skeptical regarding its healing powers. But after one session, with instant noticeable results, I’m a firm believer in it, and would highly recommend it to my friends and family.”

“After finishing 30 days of chemotherapy and radiation, I wanted to reset my body and get out leftover toxins. After the juice cleanse I felt great and had more energy. Jen was a great coach! She kept myself and the group as a whole motivated and was always available for questions!”
Ben G.
“Reiki has helped me balance my energy and my stress levels. As someone who was diagnosed with Lupus a few years ago, stress plays a huge factor in how my flare ups happen. With Reiki in my life I am able to live life to the fullest.”
Bethanie W.
“Jen is truly intuitive. I have been working through some of the most difficult challenges in work and in life and she has been there to listen, hold space, and heal. I’m a skeptic of most things and Reiki was one of them. Working with Jen has transformed my life by helping bring me back to center and give me clarity.”

I absolutely loved doing the juice cleanse with Jennifer! I learned a lot about the benefits of juicing for my health goals. I could not believe how much energy I had and how clear minded I felt while doing the cleanse. Now juicing is part of my everyday and I love it!

“I recently met Jen through a very special circumstance. I am a firm believer that our meeting was not happenstance, but our paths were meant to cross. Jen is caring, compassionate, has excellent therapeutic communication skills, and is extremely knowledgeable in a variety of aspect. She is a natural healer, has a calming presence and a warm heart. It didn’t matter the time of day, or what she was doing, if I needed her she was there for me. She has a way of listening, asking questions, and offering advice or techniques that instantly made me feel calm, and have a better understanding on the situation. She is very passionate about what she does. She takes the time and energy needed to help without hesitation. I am so thankful my path crossed with Jen. She is an amazing woman, and I am now proud to call her a friend.”

I have been attending Jen’s Reiki/Meditation circles since May of 2022 and the changes in my life have been amazing! The guided meditations are easy to follow and the energetic shifts that happen are powerful, but the one-two-punch is the Reiki energy you receive through Jen after the meditation. The really opens you up to receive the Love and Abundance the Universe has been waiting for you to claim! My boyfriend never heard of a chakra before he attended Jen’s circle. He is now attending her circles regularly and even meditating at home, because he says it quiets his mind and reduces his anxiety. When he can't sleep at night we practice the breathing techniques that Jen taught us to get out of our heads and quiet the monkey chatter. I will finish by saying I was privileged to receive a full hour Reiki session with Jen that was Peaceful and Relaxing and bonus!... my back pain was gone after one session! Hope to see you at a circle!
