What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the art and science of using natural plant extracts such as essential oils in a variety of ways to heal the mind, body, and spirit. Aromatherapy promotes the harmonization of emotional, physical and spiritual health which leads to the perfect healing environment for the body to enact its natural healing abilities.
Essential oils are extracted from the roots, leaves, seeds, or blossoms of plants. Despite coming from the same plant, essential oils obtained from one part of a plant may differ from those from another part of the same plant rendering it more/less effective. A trained aromatherapist understands the synergy of essential oils and the body and can help you understand how and when to use them to promote optimum health.
Essential oils can be taken by the body through inhalation, topical application, or in certain circumstances, internally. Essential oils have been used for more than 6,000 years and have recorded uses dating back to ancient Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome to address physical, mental, and spiritual concerns. It is important to find a trained practitioner to help you learn to use essential oils safely as they are highly concentrated. Sadly, not all essential oils on the market are of equal quality. A trained aromatherapist can help you learn how to identify good quality products to ensure your safety and minimize unwanted effects.
How does aromatherapy work?
To address the two main methods of use (topical and aromatic), let’s go back to the days when you had science class and were learning about your skin and your sense of smell.
Your skin is the largest organ of your body and serves as a powerful barrier to protect your body from its environment. While its purpose is to keep things out of the body, skin also has the ability to absorb things that are applied to it. If you remember, our skin is made up of 3 main layers (Epidermis, Dermis, and Hypodermis). Each layer has a specific function in protecting our body and varies in its ability to absorb products applied to it. Generally speaking, the smaller the molecule being applied to the skin, the better and faster it will absorb. Essential oils contain tiny molecules and are typically applied to the body using a carrier oil This makes their absorption into the body and ultimately your bloodstream speedy-quick and helps to achieve our goals faster than oral consumption.
You may remember that the sense of smell is powerful. Recent science is demonstrating that the human nose is capable of identifying 1 Trillion different smells. When an essential oil is diffused or smelled, those tiny microscopic molecules make their way to the back of the nose where there are millions of sensory neurons. Each sensory neuron, in this case olfactory neurons, contain an odor receptor where the tiny molecules bond and start a reaction. Once this bond occurs, an electrical impulse is sent to the olfactory bulb at the base of your brain. Here it is sent on to other areas of the brain for processing and interpretation. Areas of the brain responsible for memory, taste, and learning are triggered and help us interpret the aroma.
During an aromatherapy session, you work with a trained aromatherapist to help you discover your scent preferences, body system support goals, how to use essential oils safely, how essential oils interact with the body on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level, and how to check for allergies/sensitivities to essential oils.
Our aromatherapist cannot diagnose, treat, or cure any medical condition. You need to see a medical practitioner for that. It is important to share your medical conditions and any medications you are taking with the aromatherapist so that they can ensure there are no harmful interactions with your current medical treatment process. It is always a good idea to consult your healthcare team and share with them your plan to use essential oils. Our aromatherapist can help you better understand essential oils so you can feel empowered to speak with your medical care team.
